Val emailed me this article earlier today and I'm just curious if anyone else has heard of this before. Basically the article says that "Five miles beneath Yellowstone, lies an immense pool of red hot magma. Fed from the Earth's mantle, it has been growing. This reservoir of magma and gas is now 31 miles long, 19 miles wide, and six miles deep. The building pressures must be enormous." And then goes on to talk about how a massive eruption would be catastrophic to North America. Ya know, freezing temperatures caused by the blanket of ash and dust, massive earthquakes all over, blah blah blah, etc, etc, all that good end of the world kind of stuff. Now, i'm not quite ready to relocate to Thailand just yet, but I am curious. Has anyone ever heard of this before? It seems like if there was some global killing volcano buried beneath a national park, I feel like I would have heard of it before. Not sure though, it's not like I look up volcanoes or national parks very often, but still I like to think I'm a fairly knowledgable gentleman. (I AM TOO A GENTLEMAN...okay, but I'm knowledgeable regardless). So I'm just curious if this is just volcano paranoia stirred up by Mt. St. Helens, OR a website trying to cash in on teh paranoia caused by Mt. St. Helens. Not real familiar with this Earthside.com, but again, it's not like I spend a lot of time reading about stuff like this. So anyway, just curious, and also passing it along if it is true, cause it's interesting, if it's accurate.

I am not an expert, but this doesn't sound too upsetting to me; Old Faithful and the rest have to get their energy from somewhere, after all ...

Yeah I agree totally. I'm just curious if any of the points of the article (I.E. has erupted before 640,000 years ago or whatever, etc) have any validity to them. Like I said, never heard of it, and was just curious if anyone else had heard of it, or if someone had just pulled it out of their backsides! But good point about the geysers and their juice. I suppose it is at least somewhat based on reality.

There's been another article done on this previously. It is a really popular idea, but scientists don't seem to be too worried.

Ya know, I bet somewhere, right now, Ben Affleck is proposing a script based upon this very thing.
